In 1809, while a prisoner of the French governor on Mauritius, Matthew Flinders wrote a short biography of his beloved cat, who had disappeared four years earlier. In this talk I will explore what Flinders’ Biographical Tribute to the Memory of Trim tells us about daily life on board a voyage of exploration, and what we discover about Flinders himself from his account of Trim’s short but eventful life.

Gillian Dooley is the co-editor of Matthew Flinders’ Private Journal (2005), and (with Philippa Sandall) of TRIM: The Cartographer’s Cat (2019), a new authoritative edition of Flinders’ Biographical Tribute. She also writes on authors including Jane Austen, Iris Murdoch, V S Naipaul and J M Coetzee. Dooley’s most recent lecture at TJC was 'A MOST LUXURIOUS STATE': Men and Music in Jane Austen's Novels.
