As a child, it was always a big treat to go into the city and explore the magnificent department stores and admire their range of shopping temptations. Department stores like Georges, Myer and David Jones beckoned us to come in see and buy the latest must have item.

The department store is literally defined presents a wide range of consumer goods in different areas of the store, each area ("department") specializing in a product category. The department store (as we know it) started to pop up in large numbers across the world from the middle of the 19th century. They reshaped our shopping habits, and defined service and luxury. Today, they are grappling to survive in the age on online shopping.

Indeed, many have gone and many more will go, but as you will discover some department stores have reinvented themselves and are holding their own. This fascinating lecture looks at the rise and fall of the Department store.
