THE RISE OF THE PRIVATE MUSEUM with Georgina S. Walker

Wednesday 23 Nov 2022, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

The private museum has become a highly visible and aspirational model for a growing number of influential wealthy collectors over the last two decades. This talk seeks to offer an examination of contemporary philanthropic gestures, the development of private art museums and the sustainability of the private collector’s museum beyond the original founder’s lifetime.

GEORGINA WALKER is a Teaching Associate in Art History and Curatorship at the University of Melbourne. Her monograph entitled, THE PRIVATE COLLECTOR’S MUSEUM: Public Good Versus Private Gain (Routledge 2019) asserts Georgina’s position as one of a handful of international scholars who has conducted targeted research that connects the rising popularity of private museums with new models of philanthropy, collecting and complex inter-relationships between private and public museums.

This lecture is presented on-site at TJC. Please see your ticket for details.

This lecture is supported by The Colin Holden Charitable Trust and The Friends of TJC.

Copies of Georgina Walker’s THE PRIVATE COLLECTOR’S MUSEUM: Public Good Versus Private Gain is also available in our SHOP.
