In this illustrated talk, Susan Scollay will discuss the history of the oriental carpet in the east and its appearance in European paintings and interiors, from the time of King Henry VIII in the sixteenth century, to the height of its popularity in the decoration of the great country houses of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
Susan Scollay is an internationally recognised specialist in historic and eastern textiles. She is a contributing editor of HALI, the London-based journal of carpet, textile and Islamic art, and is currently completing a PhD at La Trobe University, researching the relationship between textiles and architecture in the Ottoman Turkish Court.
