THE 23rd ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING with Special Guest Speaker, Dr Susan Scollay

Wednesday 24 Aug 2022, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM

The Friends of The Johnston Collection will hold their 2023 Annual General Meeting onsite at The Johnston Collection with a very special keynote speaker Dr Susan Scollay.

Join Susan Scollay as she considers William Johnston, connoisseurship, and his collection of ‘oriental’ carpets.

As Scollay suggests, “TJC has an inventory of about 20 oriental rugs and carpets of varying designs and places of origin. Together they make an interesting study collection, yet they have seldom been considered as a cohesive group or assessed for their conservation and storage needs.”

Some were exhibited in the 2010 TJC exhibition, Fluid Borders, but this presentation reveals the scope of the collection and considers William Johnston’s criteria for acquiring his rugs in the context of the interior fashions of his era.

Dr SUSAN SCOLLAY is an art historian specialising in Islamic art and architecture and historic textiles. She is a contributing editor to HALI, the international journal of Islamic art, carpets, and textiles; a fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain; and an honorary fellow at the University of Melbourne.

Refreshments will be served, and the Annual General Meeting will be held prior to the guest speaker presentation.
