In this lecture, COLLECTIONS IN TRANSITION FROM THE PRIVATE DOMAIN TO THE PUBLIC ARENA| An overview of the recent boom in Arab Gulf State collections and museums, Christopher Marshall will survey the phenomenal rate of growth that has characterised recent museum/collection developments in the Arab Gulf States. Particular attention will be given to the Louvre Abu Dhabi, a flagship enterprise, high profile cultural antiquities museum designed by the international ‘starchitect’, Jean Nouvel, and launched in November 2017 as a result of an innovative joint partnership between the United Arab Emirates and the Musée du Louvre. The boom in cultural initiatives in this region has much to tell us about what is at stake in the rapid transition that is currently underway from private collections to public museums seeking a global advantage in an increasingly competitive international market.
CHRISTOPHER R. MARSHALL is Associate Professor of Art History, Curatorship and Museum Studies and Discipline Chair of the Art History, Art Curatorship and Arts and Cultural Management Programs at the University of Melbourne.
