Of all Asian art forms, oriental carpets are perhaps the most assimilated into western decoration and design consciousness. Eyewitness accounts describe carpets from the eastern tradition in Spain in the 12'" century, and an early 14'h century fresco in France is the first visual depiction of such a carpet being used in Europe. This illustrated talk traces the appeal of oriental carpets to European consumers and collectors, their use in English palaces and country houses, their appeal to wealthy Flemish and Dutch merchants in the 16th century, and their enduring use today.
This STUDY DAY, presented by well-known art, social and cultural historians, explores the artistic, social and cultural worlds where objects, interiors and design meet, is organised to coincide with FLUID BORDERS: Ways of Seeing Oriental Rugs (5 July 2010 - 20 October 2010) a TJC Gallery Experience.
