Western artists have long responded to and learned from the sophisticated, complex designs and staggering colour and pattern in so-called 'Oriental' rugs and textiles. At once abstract and potent with meanings which ore barely more than intuitively understood by the many artists who have embraced Asian textiles through the centuries, these articles have had a powerful resonance and role in Western art. Elizabeth Cross will account for the mind-changing nature of these rugs and textiles.
