PUBLIC TASTE & GOOD DESIGN: Museum collecting and the decorative arts with Jonathan Sweet

8 Mar 2001 – 6 Apr 2001

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London has provided a model for museum collecting in the field of applied and decorative arts since the 1850s. In this insightful lecture, Jonathan Sweet will explore the influence the V&A has had on the way public decorative and applied art collections have been shaped in Australia. He will also discuss the issues that curators consider today when acquiring new pieces on behalf of their institutions,

Jonathan Sweet is an art and design historian and curator who worked at the V&A between 1988 and 1997. He is still associated with the museum and is a contributor to the forthcoming book “The Victorian Vision" (V&A Publication) which accompanies an exhibition of the same name at the V&A (opens March 2001). He is a lecturer in Museum Collections at Deakin University, Melbourne.
