PORTRAIT MINIATURES IN THE TIME OF JANE AUSTEN with Carmela and Roger Arturi Phillips

Thursday 26 Oct 2006, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

Spend a morning enjoying Georgian and Regency society. Roger & Carmela’s lecture will explore The Johnston Collection portrait miniatures from this period in greater detail, explain social and cultural changes, and look at the evolution of costume.

Carmella will be wearing a replica dress of the times, evoking heroines of Jane Austen’s novel. Also on display will be a genuine dress of the period, around 1800 in embroidered white muslin, with a little train. This is an opportunity to see an eerily beautiful relic of a young girl’s life. The dress was kept for 200 years and was recently discovered stashed in a leaky family attic in England!
