PORTRAIT MINIATURES IN THE TIME OF JANE AUSTEN with Carmela and Roger Arturi Phillips

Thursday 19 Oct 2006, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

See Georgian and Regency society through The Johnston Collection. Hear about it in Roger and Carmela’s lecture when they look at The Johnston Collection portrait miniatures in this period in greater detail, explain social and cultural changes, and look at the evolution of costume.

Carmela Arturi Phillips will be wearing a replica dress of these times, evoking the heroines of Jane Austen’s novels. Also, on display will be a genuine dress of the period, circa 1800 in embroidered white muslin, with a little train, an opportunity to see an eerily beautiful relic of a young girl’s life. This dress was kept for 200 years and was recently discovered stashed in a leaky family attic in England!

As always, Carmela and Roger’s lecture will be illustrated with superb images.
