Asian exported goods from chintz to parasols transformed European fashion in the early modern period (1500—1800).
Asian textiles influenced the colours and forms of many adjacent things ranging from French porcelain services to Japanese lunch boxes. Scenes depicting fashion itself were everywhere.
Learn about the fertile interaction of fashion and the decorative arts, with a special focus on China Export and Japan, the East India companies and a range of glamorous objects from silhouettes to portrait mirrors.
PETER MCNEIL’S research unites his passion for the decorative arts with many other aspects of visual culture including fashion and interiors.
Always working across cultures and media, his many published works include Luxury: A Rich History and Pretty Gentlemen. Peter is a Distinguished Professor of Design History at UTS.
This lecture is presented on-site at TJC. Please see your ticket for details.
