Paul Marmottan, the dilettante son of a self made 19th century industrialist, was an avid collector of Napoleonic memorabilia and donated his collection to the Academy of Fine Arts.
The charming Belle Époque mansion would benefit from numerous legacies of amazing diversity. Dr de Bellio, who was the doctor to Monet, Pissarro, Sisley and Renoir, donated his collection of impressionist art, which in turn inspired Monet’s son to bequeath his father’s collection
This lecture will explore these legacies, and discuss artistic philanthropy in 19th century Paris.
Sylvia Sagona is Fellow of the School of Languages at the University of Melbourne (Department of French and Italian Studies) and specialises in 19th century French art and society.
