CHATSWORTH AND PETWORTH: Two country houses of creativity and patronage with Suzanne Bravery

Thursday 26 Oct 2023, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

This talk looks at the influential and important patronage of the visual arts by the Egremont family of Petworth, West Sussex and the Cavendishes of Chatsworth, Derbyshire.

Watercolour painter JMW Turner is closely associated with Petworth and there is an ongoing commitment to exhibiting contemporary sculpture and painting at Chatsworth.

Suzanne Bravery curated and managed house museums at the Historic Houses Trust of NSW (now Museums of History NSW), including Elizabeth Bay House, Vaucluse House, Elizabeth Farm, Rouse Hill estate and Meroogal.

She managed the Grainger Museum at the University of Melbourne and was a Head Curator at the National Museum of Australia.

Suzanne’s research interests include historic interiors, social history, and conservation housekeeping.  This talk was inspired by attendance at the Attingham Summer School.

This lecture is presented on-site at The Johnston Collection. Please see your ticket for details.

This lecture is supported by The Colin Holden Charitable Trust and The Friends of TJC.
