THE COSTUME COLLECTION | The Friends Walk & Talk

Tuesday 24 Sep 2019, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

The Costume Collection is a privately-owned collection of strictly Australian costumes, jewellery and accessories dating back to 1788, chronicling the social history of fashion and dressmaking.  Bryan and Loel Thomson have dedicated their time and resources to the collection, preservation and display of two hundred years of Australian fashion.

For those who are interested in social history, the history of fashion or just beautiful clothes, this is an opportunity to learn more about the history of this collection then stroll around the various displays that make up this fascinating assemblage. The Costume Collection tells the fashion history of Melbourne and Victoria and the strengths of the collection are in the locally made and worn costumes, and in the work of contemporary designers inspired by their own designs.

The displays presented are varied, professionally exhibited, cleverly presented and reflecting Australian social history – right through from mid-1800’s to the 1980’s. The information accompanying the displays is fascinating and Loel Thomson faithfully attends to every detail, as well as providing an often humorous and thorough introductory talk on arrival.

The Friends will thoroughly enjoy an interesting and informative afternoon at The Costume Collection.
