The Friends of The Johnston Collection will hold their 2024 Annual General Meeting onsite at The Johnston Collection with a very special keynote speaker, the new CEO of The Johnston Collection, Dr Louise Voll Box.
Join Louise as she presents 18th Century Voyages to Calais: Collecting and Commerce.
For English collectors bound for France, the voyage to Calais was uncomfortable and often perilous. This presentation explores channel crossings through the recollections of an intrepid travelling duchess, Lady Elizabeth Seymour Percy, 1st Duchess of Northumberland (1716-1776). By offering incentives to ships' captains, coercing acquaintances to convey artworks on her behalf, and canny avoidance of import duties, the duchess defied storms, becalming, and customs' officials to transport her acquisitions on her own terms.
DR LOUISE VOLL BOX is an art historian, researcher, educator, and curator. Before she was appointed to her new role as CEO of The Johnston Collection, she taught in the art history and curatorship programs at the University of Melbourne. Louise has been a great supporter of The Johnston Collection for almost 20 years as a member of The Friends, and previously as a committee member of The Friends of The Johnston Collection.
Refreshments will be served, and the Annual General Meeting will be held prior to the guest speaker presentation.
Spaces Limited. Bookings Essential.
