THE 21st ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (VIRTUAL EVENT) | with Special Guest Speaker, David McAllister AM

The Friends of The Johnston Collection will hold their 2020 Annual General Meeting via a Zoom Event with a very special key note speaker, David McAllister AM, the soon to retire Artistic Director of The Australia Ballet. “In Conversation with David” will be an opportunity for The Friends to revisit with David, following his most successful installation at The Johnston Collection in 2014, “DAVID MCALLISTER Rearranges Mr Johnston’s Collection”.

The event will begin promptly at 5:00pm. Please ensure you are online before the start to allow admittance to the meeting. Virtual events are not recorded and can only be viewed at the time listed on your ticket. Ticket registration will close at 9am on day of event , unless sold out prior.

David McAllister’s autobiography Soar: A Life Freed by Dance, supportively co-authored by journalist Amanda Dunn, has just been published. Soar is his story, not a history book, and it nimbly chronicles the sacrifices, setbacks and successes of a life devoted to dance.

McAllister has had a long and successful career with the Australian Ballet, as Senior and then Principal Artist, taking many leading roles with the company. He has also performed as a guest artist overseas, including with the Bolshoi Ballet, the Kirov Ballet and The National Ballet of Canada, before taking up the role of Artistic Director with The Australian Ballet in 2001.

Told in the warm tone of McAllister’s voice, Soar gives the reader the sense of being humbly regaled on decades of dance, as well as being taken into highly personal confidences of life beyond the footlights. While Soar primarily tells of the impact of dance in McAllister’s life, the book is a reminder of the joy that his devotion to dance has brought to countless grateful audience members. Lovers of ballet will find much to ponder, savour and enjoy in Soar and lovers of Australian dance will be fascinated by the behind the scenes details about the running of the company.

For The Friends of The Johnston Collection this will be a very special evening, one which all ballet enthusiasts will enjoy.
