The upmarket department store, Georges, was a fixture in Melbourne for over 100 years before it closed in 1995. Well known in its last 50 years as the city’s premier women's fashion department store, generations of Victorians visited Georges to buy special gifts, clothes and accessories, and the store developed a reputation for superior quality. In the 1910s and 1920s, there was much competition, with large and small department stores in the city and suburbs competing for custom; Georges maintained a position through basement sales, and firmly aiming at middle income and better off women. Villa Alba is hosting a retrospective exhibiton mounted by Friends of Georges. Georges’ historian Justin Maclean, and fashion anthropologist Tom McEvoy, have curated a wide-ranging display.
Join The Friends for an afternoon of discovery and old memories as the display is viewed. Afternoon Refreshments will be served.
