DOMINION Exhibition Tour | Arts West Gallery

Thursday 18 Apr 2024, 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM

DOMINION, an exhibition at the Arts West Gallery at the University of Melbourne, brings together the work of contemporary artists in dialogue with historical objects from the University of Melbourne and The Johnston Collection. The exhibition examines European encounters with non-European people and the resultant known (and hidden) shared stories. Narratives in the exhibition explore, for example, how the polite trappings of the age of sociability - refined furniture and elegant porcelain vessels for beverages - also mask the injustices of colonisation; the movement of peoples and ideas across geographies; and themes of justice and joy.

Featured artists include: Abdul-Rahman Abdullah, Safdar Ahmed, Richard Bell, Penny Byrne, Michael Riley and Hadieh Shafie.

The Friends will join curators Dr Matthew Martin and Nur Shkembi from the Art History and Curatorship Program at the University of Melbourne for an exclusive floor talk to learn about the development and themes of the exhibition.

Attendees will then enjoy refreshments at historic University House Professors' Walk, the members-only University staff club originally built in 1884 as one of the homes for the University's founding professors. University House Professor's Walk is now the last remaining original professors' residence on campus.
