Why were children’s faces largely absent from medieval art yet abundant in Renaissance arts? Inspired by the number of cherubs, cupids and putting in Mr Johnston’s collection, Dr Anna Blainey investigates the origins of these child figures- winged and unwinged – which were so prominent in the fine and decorative arts in the 17th and 18th centuries.
Anna Blainey has a PhD in history and has lectured in history and women’s studies.
