Intrigued by a painting from Czech history in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria, and then by a portrait of a Scottish-born Queen of Bohemia in the collection of a provincial German museum, Eugene Barilo von Reisberg uncovered a rather obscured but fascinating character of Elizabeth Stuart (1569-1662), the only daughter of King James VI and I and his wife, Princess Anne of Denmark, who, as the ill-fated Queen of Bohemia, better known to posterity as ‘The Winter Queen’, became one of the main catalysts behind the infamous ‘Thirty Year War’. The lecture follows the trials and tribulations of The Winter Queen through her years of triumphs and exiles, and her eventual return to her native Britain, where, posthumously, she unexpectedly emerged as an integral link in the British succession crisis of 1700-1701.

DR EUGENE BARILO VON REISBERG is a Melbourne-based scholar and art adviser, who shares his passion for art, history, and culture from the eighteenth century to the present day through regular lectures and publications. He has completed a doctoral dissertation on Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873), the 19th century elite portrait specialist, and is currently working towards a catalogue raisonné of the artist’s works.
