VIRTUAL LECTURE (LIVE) | CAN’T STOP THE MUSIC: exploring the biographical house museums of composers Edvard Grieg and Amadeus Mozart with Suzanne Bravery

Thursday 28 Oct 2021, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

What makes a biographical house museum resonate for a contemporary visitor, especially when it celebrates the lives and works of a famous composer?  This talk looks at the diverse approaches taken at Troldhaugen, Bergen, home of Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg from 1885 to 1907 and Mozart Haus, Vienna, home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart from 1781 to 1791, to capture the spirit of the place once filled with music.

SUZANNE BRAVERY curated and managed house museums at the Historic Houses Trust of NSW (now Sydney Living Museums), including Elizabeth Bay House, Vaucluse House, Elizabeth Farm, Rouse Hill estate and Meroogal.  She managed the Grainger Museum at the University of Melbourne, and was a Head Curator at the National Museum of Australia.

Suzanne’s research interests include historic interiors, social history and conservation housekeeping.  This talk was inspired by visits to houses of composers, including these, and to explore what makes their narratives resonate with a contemporary visitor.
