While the lives of Anne, the last Stuart Queen on the throne of the United Kingdom, and George III, the ‘mad’ king, have been the subject of scholarly research and, lately, popular interpretations, the two interim rulers, George I and George II, are seldom mentioned. The lecture offers an insight into the two monarchs, as well as Frederick, Prince of Wales (the father of George III), who, by the accident of birth, had to seek an uneasy balance between their fealty to the crown of the United Kingdom and their native and strategically important Dukedom of Hanover; their tumultuously unconventional private lives; and their role as patrons and supporters of artistic talent on both sides of the North Sea.
Dr Eugene Barilo Von Reisberg is a Melbourne-based scholar and art adviser, who shares his passion for art, history, and culture from the eighteenth century to the present day through regular lectures and publications. He has completed a doctoral dissertation on Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873), the 19th-century elite portrait specialist, and is currently working towards a catalogue raisonné of the artist’s works.
