PHILIP THE UNKNOWN: Part 3: Mother and Sisters of the Duke of Edinburgh | Ancestors and Family of the Duke of Edinburgh through their portraits and photographs with Eugene Barilo von Reisberg

Tuesday 17 Sep 2019, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

Lecture 3: Mother and Sisters of the Duke of Edinburgh

The concluding lecture narrates turbulent lives - and, at times, tragic fates - of the immediate family of the Duke of Edinburgh: Prince Philip’s mother, Alice, Princess of Greece and Denmark, and his four sisters, Margarita, Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg; Theodora, Margravine of Baden; Cecile, Princess of Hesse; and Sophie, Princess of Hesse and of Hanover. The lecture unravels a complex web of politically and dynastically motivated intermarriages and the effects of wars and revolutions on the closely-knit family unit.

DR EUGENE BARILO VON REISBERG is a Melbourne-based scholar and art adviser, who shares his passion for art, history, and culture from the eighteenth century to the present day through regular lectures and publications. He has completed a doctoral dissertation on Franz Xaver Winterhalter (1805-1873), the 19th century elite portrait specialist, and is currently working towards a catalogue raisonné of the artist’s works.
