Historical clothing references in Alexander McQueen with Dr Paola Di Trocchio

Saturday 22 Aug 2026, 2:00 PM – 3:30 PM

Alexander McQueen was a British designer known for his groundbreaking clothes, shocking catwalk shows, and precise tailoring. He drew on a broad range of references from the natural world, art, history and his imagination. He also drew on fashion history references from the sixteenth through to the nineteenth centuries. He collected historical fashion and held an extensive archive that he didn’t allow outsiders to view.

Join me to discover the historical clothing references in the stunning, complex and deeply influential work of Alexander McQueen for his own label (1992-2010) as well as for his work at Givenchy (1996-2001).

Dr Paola Di Trocchio is a leading fashion curator, writer, and speaker. In her twenty-year career at the National Gallery of Victoria, she curated and co-curated twenty-two fashion and textiles exhibitions including Edward Steichen and Art Deco Fashion, The Krystyna Campbell-Pretty Fashion Gift, 200 Years of Australian Fashion, Guo Pei among others. She was co-ordinating co-curator for The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier from the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. She is currently working freelance on various projects.
