This lecture examines the origins and evolution of the Arts and Crafts movement in England by studying the work of some of its leading architects and designers. Commencing with the architect, Philip Webb, two key houses will be discussed – ‘Red House’, designed for William Morris in 1859-60, and ‘Standen’, from the end of Webb’s career, and famous for its Morris & Co furnishings.
Next, the creative partnership between Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll is explored, as exemplified at ‘Munstead Wood’; as well as ‘Van’, home of the architect, W. D. Caroe, with its water garden designed by Jekyll. The focus then moves westward, starting with William Morris’ home, ‘Kelmscott Manor’, and continues with a group of famous Arts and Crafts houses including ‘Rodmarten Manor’, designed by Ernest Gimson; ‘Owlpen Manor’ restored by architect Norman Jewson; ‘Madresfield Court’, with its library designed by C. R. Ashbee and the Guild of Handicraft and extraordinary chapel designed by Henry Payne of the Birmingham Group; and ‘Perrycroft’, designed by C. F. A. Voysey.
The lecture concludes with a brief discussion of the Arts and Crafts Movement’s influence in Australia. The lecture is inspired by the speaker’s participation in the Attingham Trust’s Study Programme: Arts and Crafts Houses and Gardens in 2024.
