A DISCOURSE OF THE WORLD OF GIOVANNI BATTISTA PIRANESI with Tom Hazell

Wednesday 2 Oct 1996, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM

In the eighteenth century the grand tours made by English Aristocrats created a market for romantic views of Italy. One of the most notable exponents of this genre was Giovanni Battista Piranesi. Piranesi is famous for his engraving of fantastic views of ruins, prisons and of ancient Roman monuments.

Tom Hazell, erudite, urbane and on of Melbourne’s most restated Italophiles, has had a long fascination with the superb works of this most evocative of artists. He has formed an impressive collection, and in the process, studied the man and his works. Using this knowledge, he will present a very special discourse based on the life and times of Giovanni Battista Piranesi

An exhibition of the works of the celebrated 18th Century artist will be shown in The Kent Room. Mr Hazell will also talk about these prints.
