VAMFF ARTS PROGRAM 2019 | LINKS & LINEAGES | The Krystyna Campbell-Pretty Fashion Gift with Paola Di Trocchio

Monday 4 Mar 2019, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM

The Krystyna Campbell-Pretty Fashion Gift is a microcosm of the world of haute couture and Parisian fashion from the late nineteenth century to the twenty-first century.

Featuring designers from Charles Frederick Worth, the celebrated ‘father of haute couture’, to the iconoclastic Alexander McQueen, the collection includes nearly 200 garments and an extensive fashion research collection comprising hundreds of designers’ sketches; workbooks; photographs; and fashion magazines, journals and periodicals from the early nineteenth century onwards.

Among other things, the collection reflects historical developments in fashion in Paris, revealing interconnections between designers, and frequently the synergistic development or evolution of skills and techniques. This talk will explore a number of those connections.

PAOLA DI TROCCHIO is a fashion and textiles curator at the National Gallery of Victoria where she has curated many exhibitions since 2003 including 200 Years of Australian Fashion, Dior and Yamamoto: The New Look and Edward Steichen and Art Deco Fashion, among others. In 2014 she was coordinating co-curator of The Fashion World of Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk. She has published extensively and is currently completely her PhD at University of Technology Sydney.
