William Johnston, the founder of The Johnston Collection, was a widely-travelled man of eclectic taste. This is reflected today at The Johnston Collection, a museum of fine and decorative arts in East Melbourne, where visitors can view antiques he acquired in North Africa and India mingling happily with pieces from Europe. While touring Fairhall exhibition house, eyes are frequently drawn to the set of eight watercolour paintings from India that adorn the walls. Their attractiveness and charm are immediately apparent; however, an aura of the exotic prompts wonder and questions.
