STUDY DAY 2018 | PRIVATE COLLECTIONS : PATTERNS OF COLLECTING | FROM THE BOWER with the Bower artists

Saturday 21 Jul 2018, 11:40 AM – 12:25 PM

PATTERNS OF COLLECTING | FROM THE BOWER at The Johnston Collection explores the artists’ own considerable collections and how this has inspired their works of art. Each artist will speak briefly focussing on some of the items in their collection and the role these items play in their studio practice and visual imagery.

PATTERNS OF COLLECTING will be discussed in the context of the preceding exhibitions at Warrnambool Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Ballarat in 2017.

LORIS BUTTON, DEBORAH KLEIN, LOUISE SAXTON & CAROLE WILSON (the Bower artists) are the guest artists in the current exhibition PATTERNS OF COLLECTING: FROM THE BOWER at The Johnston Collection. Button works with prints, paintings and drawings; Klein with prints, drawings, and more recently painting, digital printmaking and book art; Saxton focuses on reconstruction of discarded needlework (which she posits is a “silent collaboration with the anonymous original makers”); and Wilson initially in posters and more recently in found objects to explore themes of botany, travel and historical ornament.  The artists have collectively received numerous awards and are represented in international, national, public and university collections.

This lecture is presented as part of STUDY DAY 2018 | PRIVATE COLLECTIONS | PUBLIC SPACES: THE VALUE OF ART & EPHEMERA held on Saturday 21 July 2018 from 9.00 am – 4.00 pm
