Join the The Friends for another self-drive day in the country commencing at Bank House, a romantic country garden in Victoria’s Central Highlands, with the house dating from the late 19th Century. Once the Newlyn branch of the National Bank of Australasia, it is a long time since a teller sat in the former banking chamber and now the building hides a secret garden which unfolds up the gentle slope behind the house, with a series of surprises concealed behind hedges of hornbeam, privet and japonica. Like the weatherboard bank itself, the garden takes inspiration from grander traditions but is realised in a rustic fashion that sits comfortably amongst the beautiful rolling hills of Newlyn. Andrew Lowth and Nigel Smith have created a nod to English landscape and perennial gardening, with formal allees juxtaposed with woodland glades and walks, a meadow garden and a lush, ornamental vegetable garden. The garden combines formal structure with exuberant and rare plantings in a romantic garden design.
The Friends will start the 2022 Spring Country Garden Tour at Bank House before visiting another garden in the area. Lunch is included as part of the day’s activities.
