In memory of Nina Stanton (1948 – 2009)

Join textile historian and author Annabel Westman, exclusive and in conversation with TJC Director, Louis Le Vaillant, as she introduces and discusses examples from her recent publication Fringe, Frog and Tassel.

The first of its kind, the book traces the history of trimmings in interior decoration in Britain and Ireland.  In this talk Westman will consider the design and usage of this often overlooked subject and its dependence of French fashion, with illustrations from historic houses and museums. She will also touch on the importance of the 'laceman', the maker of these trimmings, and the relationship with the upholsterer in the creation of a fashionable room.

Trimmings provide a visual feast for the eye with their colour and intricate detail. Sometimes more expensive than the rich fabrics they enhanced, they are often the only surviving evidence of a lost decorative scheme, reapplied to replacement textiles or found as fragments in the attic.

ANNABEL WESTMAN is an independent textile historian and consultant and is the Executive Director of The Attingham Trust, England. She is a trustee of Stowe House and a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.

NINA STANTON (1948 – 2009) was Founding Chairman, The Copland Foundation, Director, The Johnston Collection (2000 – 2008), and Attingham Alumni Summer School (2002) and Royal Collection Studies (2005).
