D’Orly Carte was born in 1844 in London’s Soho. He grew into a young man whose talents shone in music, theatre, and literature and who in his early 20s left his father’s instrument-making business for a career in show business. He made a great fortune out of doing the things he loved; as a hotelier he built the Savoy Theatre and the Royal English Opera House. In the 1870s he backed and produced the comic operas of Gilbert and Sullivan. He elevated the Savoy Hotel with new standards of service and cuisine.
All these attributes make a fascinating story of theatre and the hotel guests, including Nellie Melba.
