Object Detail

Description
goblet with a funnel-shaped bowl, above a composite stem wine goblet, round funnel bowl, wheel engraved, knopped section over an inverted baluster stem, conical foot.

The bowl is finely wheel engraved and inscribed with a continuous panel completely encircling the bowl that depicts a country estate, or of a plantation. The scene comprises a manor house with a number of plantation buildings, orchards, fields, farm animals and workers.

The bowl is inscribed “‘HET GROEYEN BLOEYEN VAN DE PLANTAGIE. CORNELIUS BURG” may translate to the “Growing and Blooming of the Plantation. Cornelius Burg”.
The goblet is signed and dated and engraved under the foot ‘J. Sang’ / ‘1770’

There are two goblets recorded with engraved scenes of plantations in 18th century Dutch Surinam, it is likely that the scene on the Collection’s goblet is also of such a plantation.
