AN INTERIOR LIFE | William Johnston and his Collection

17 Feb 2020 – 20 Nov 2020

AN INTERIOR LIFE  presents a new arrangement of William Johnston’s collection in Fairhall, the exhibition-house. Inspired by Johnston’s friend, and later Trustee of the Collection, John Rogan suggested that “The objective in the presentation of Fairhall will be to maintain the atmosphere created by William Johnston and to build on this atmosphere.” Fairhall is recreated with a relaxed “English Country House style” treatment inspired by the looks of the great English designers Sybil Fowler and John Colefax, of Colefax and Fowler, London.

Over his lifetime Johnston assembled the most astonishing collection now comprising more than 1,400 objects of mostly 18th century English furniture, paintings, ceramics and objet d’art, now regarded as one of the best collections of its kind in Australasia.

Enjoy a visually enticing display of over 400 years of art history, and share in William Johnston’s lifetime passion for collecting beautiful things.Rare items will adorn each room of Fairhall exhibition-house as you immerse yourself in otherworldly treasures and luscious interiors, filled with stories of travel and tales of the past. Experience objects gathered by William Johnston unfettered by ropes or barriers.

AN INTERIOR LIFE  offers a traditional interpretation of the Collection.
